Q: I keep hearing the job market is tight right now, but for some reason, I’m having a hard time finding good employees for my startup. It seems like they’re just looking for a job and don’t want to take the entrepreneurial ride with me. What can I do to find the right people?
Adam V.
A: Adam, there’s an old business adage that states, “Hire slow and fire fast.” Unfortunately, out of desperation, startups tend to do the opposite. I don’t know what your immediate specific needs are, but if you can be patient and hold out for the right person, that is usually the best strategy. As far as where to find them, be creative and think outside the box. Any entrepreneur has to be almost like a head coach in sports and always be recruiting. And let’s face it, not every recruit to your business is going to fall into your lap from Indeed or CareerBuilder. LinkedIn still has value, so you should leverage your online connections. At the end of the day, the most important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter where or in what industry you find your next hire as long as the skillsets and attitude you need align.
